Celebrating Survivors - Shaquita Jackson

My breast cancer was detected by my primary care physician during an annual check-up in March of 2023. She was doing breast exams and noticed an enlarged lymph node under my right arm. She sent me to get a biopsy, which came back malignant.

From that point, the search was to find the origin of the cancer, which happened to be a 5-centimeter tumor in the top portion of my right breast.

After several tests, I was referred to a medical oncologist. She drew up a plan for me, which included chemotherapy from July 14th to October 27th to shrink the tumor. My surgery was scheduled for November 28th, 2023.

The most challenging part of dealing with cancer has been the fact that it’s emotionally and financially draining. It has put a strain on my relationship. My significant other is pending approval for disability. I was the only one generating income. After my surgery, I had to manage my drain lines, recover, and deal with financial challenges.

Right before Christmas, I got an infection and had to have my second emergency surgery. I came home from the hospital on Christmas Eve. To my surprise, the Celebrating Life Foundation showed up at my door on Christmas Day with food and gifts.

In the midst of the storm, I have learned to celebrate even small victories. Since my infection, I have been taking intravenous antibiotics. The last phase before I could start radiation was to get my number down so that I could get off the antibiotics. They removed the needle out of my port today. So, I no longer have a needle in my chest.

In the darkest moments of this journey, I’ve still had some magical moments. God has shown his love for me through people and organizations. One of my part-time jobs took up a donation for me. I had no idea they’d done this.

I received a $300 check in the mail, totally unexpected. It came right on time to help me with my rent. It has been unexpected blessings like this that have kept me going.
